Hurley Pro Video Trials Opens Doors to Hopefuls Across U.S.

Today Hurley announced the start of the Hurley Pro Video Trials: the first-ever virtual contest for the wildcard slot in the annual ASP World Tour event at Lower Trestles in Southern California.

The event historically has chosen wildcard slots through traditional trials and hand-picked selections, but this year Hurley has opened its doors to all American hopefuls age 13 and over with an unprecedented qualify-by-video format.

“There’s a whole new generation of American surfers with limitless talent,” says Hurley VP of Sports Marketing Pat O’Connell. “So, instead of limiting our trials to just 16 competitors, we wanted to open it up to any American surfer who can put together a string of amazing waves on video — and then leave it up to a public vote. To us, that is a true wildcard and we’re confident the public will pick a someone who will fit right in with the world’s best.”

The winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles in mid-September to officially compete as one of the ASP Top 36 surfers.

Applicants are invited to submit video entries showcasing eight of their best waves (two waves per heat in a four-round contest) on thehurleypro.com from May 15 - July 15. This model mirrors the format of actual ASP competitions, in which surfers are scored on their two best waves.

Sixteen top contenders will be chosen by the judge’s panel, which comprises CEO and Founder Bob Hurley, VP Surf Marketing and former professional surfer Pat O’Connell, Hurley Pro Contest Director Mike Parsons and iconic surfer Rob Machado. Beginning July 29, the top 16 will be placed into brackets, and fans will vote for their favorite in each round in a man-on-man format. Popular vote will determine the winner, to be announced Aug. 2.

For detailed contest rules, visit thehurleypro.com.

Huntington Beach Prepares To Go From "Zero To 100"

Saturday, April 20, marks the international release of ASP World Tour surfer Lakey Peterson’s groundbreaking film Zero to 100 at HSS Bella Terra in Huntington Beach, Calif. Hurley will host the premiere, with proceeds benefiting the Hyundai Cancer Institute at CHOC. Music and a marketplace will commence onsite at Bella Terra at 5 p.m., featuring local Orange County band Hindu Pirates and R&B artist Antoine Allain. The official screening of Zero to 100 will begin at 6:45 p.m. at Century Theatres. A VIP area at Cheesecake Factory will host special guests including top surfers from the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP), sponsors and media.

In Zero to 100, filmmaker Aaron Lieber chronicles the rapid rise of one the sport's most talented and progressive female surfers in an intimate, raw and ultimately inspiring window into her life and the future of women’s surfing.

"There are so many messages in the film and hopefully everyone can relate to it and be inspired on some level," said Peterson. "At the end of the day it is simply a journey about being the best you can be, not letting other people define who you are, and not being afraid to take risks to reach your dreams.”

Tickets can be purchased at TicketBud.com, and the film begins screening publicly in May. A list of dates can be found on the film’s official website. Zero to 100 will be available on iTunes and DVD on April 20.

Hurley’s world-famous Rip My Shred Stick Tour is back and ready to hit a beach near you.
Rip My Shred Stick allows kids 16 and under to hang out with the Hurley team, test-drive their boards and compete in a no-pressure, all-fun surf event. “It’s not your typical contest,” says Hurley’s Core Accounts Marketing Manager Zach “Hula” Hartley.

“it’s based on a fun scale rather than an experience scale. And that’s the most important part for me — that everyone wins and has a good time.”

Thanks to our sponsors, contestants will get to ride new surfboards, receive goodie bags and have the chance to win prizes from: Spy, FlexFit, Mophie, Hi-Chew, Watermans Sunscreen, Futures Fins, GoPro, Whole Foods, INT Surf Technology, Chipotle, Freestyle, Riviera Paddlesurf, Roberts Surfboards, Stance Socks, Toys, T.
Hurley H2O Celebrates World Water Day

In celebration of World Water Day, Hurley's H2O program will capitalize on an opportunity to educate the public about global water scarcity. Three key programs aim to promote H2O's mission: combat the consumption of single-use plastics, raise awareness around water conservation and clean water initiatives, and provide access to clean water for those in need.

To kick off the day, Rob Machado, alongside the Rob Machado Foundation, will visit Corona Del Mar High School in Newport Beach, CA, for the 4th installation of Hydration Nation. This program empowers students to participate in an extension of the H2O program. Students raise awareness on their campus, eliminate plastics and raise money to bring filters to countries in need of clean water.

After the Hydration Nation ceremony concludes, Rob will visit Hurley HQ with Evan Marks of The Ecology Center to conduct a digital Q&A with Hurley fans on the brand's Facebook page. "So many people don't realize that 1 in 6 people don't have access to clean water," said Machado. "What that really means is, 5 in 6 can help."

Throughout the day, Hurley will bolster the efforts by giving away free reusable water bottles with every purchase on Hurley.com. By switching from single-use plastics to one reusable bottle, each person can save 2,000 gallons of water per year.

For more information on how you can be part of a solution, and to learn more about H2O, visit hurley.com/h2o.

Hurley takes home fifth consecutive SIMA Boardshort of the Year award

Hurley has taken home its unprecedented fifth consecutive SIMA Boardshort of the Year Award as announced at the SIMA Image Awards on February 7, 2013 at The Grove in Anaheim, Calif. More than 800 key influencers from the surf industry were on hand as Hurley accepted the award for the Phantom Fuse boardshort, which debuted in the marketplace in July 2012.

"I am very honored and grateful for this milestone," says Ryan Hurley, Creative Director for Hurley. "I am incredibly proud of our team – for their hard work, relentless passion and undying curiosity. It is humbling to be a part of such a talented group of humans."

The win celebrates Phantom Fuse, the lightest and most innovative boardshort in the industry. Featuring a laser-cut, two-layer “second-skin” waistband and Hurley’s patented Phantom fabrication, Phantom Fuse is the latest ground-breaking boardshort to come out of Hurley’s Phantom Innovation platform.

ABOUT HURLEY

“Hurley is a company based on inclusion,” says chairman and founder Bob Hurley. This philosophy applied to Bob Hurley’s early years as a Huntington Beach shaper, working with friends alongside the world’s best athletes to make a better surfboard. It applied to the company’s launch in 1999, when Hurley decided to start a brand that was a true microphone for youth. In 2002, Hurley was acquired by Nike — the largest and most influential sporting brand in the world. Inclusion remains a guiding principle of the company today, where innovative products like Phantom Boardshorts and game-changing events like the US Open of Surfing continue to redefine what is possible in our world. Hurley headquarters are in Costa Mesa, CA with international offices in Sydney, Tokyo, Barcelona and Bali.

COSTA MESA, CA –JANUARY 8, 2013 – Hurley announced today that it has signed Hawaiian surf prodigy John John Florence to a five-year agreement. Growing up at Hawaii’s famous surf spot known as “Pipeline,” Florence, 20, has become famous for thriving in surfing’s most high-risk situations and is looking forward to his new beginning with Hurley. “I am very grateful and happy to be riding for Hurley, especially at this time of my life,” says Florence. "To be able to start 2013 with a new team and good people will ultimately help to accomplish my goals I have set for the future. I am excited to be a part of such an innovative company and can’t wait to see what happens in the years to come."

In just one full year on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Florence has already captured the hearts and minds of the surfing world. While still a teenager, he finished fourth in the world, achieved a Triple Crown title, three wins at Pipeline, an ASP world tour win, a runner-up at the Surfer Poll and invites to two of the world’s most prestigious big-wave events. Florence wrapped up the year by being named 2012 ASP Rookie of the Year.

“John is the most innovative and talented surfer to come along in the last 20 years,” says Hurley’s VP of Sports Marketing Pat O’Connell. “Dream what might be possible in surfing and I’m sure he’s going to exceed it in the next five years. We just want to support him in every way as he continues to inspire us in all conditions.”

Florence joins what has already become the surf community’s most decorated surf team, which includes athletes such as Julian Wilson, Carissa Moore and Rob Machado. Beyond surfing for the brand, Florence will collaborate with Hurley’s Innovation team to continue to evolve and drive forward Hurley’s award-winning Phantom product platform.

Florence will help inform the next generation of Phantom boardshorts immediately as he prepares for his sophomore debut on the 2013 ASP World Tour in late February. “I’ve always liked to surround myself around magic,” said Hurley CEO and Founder Bob Hurley. “John John has that special talent that only comes around every few decades or so. It’s a magic that will transcend well beyond our world and will make us all strive to be better. Needless to say, I’m humbled, honored and so looking forward to supporting John John as he revolutionizes surfing over and over again.”

Hurley launches first-ever Phantom sandal

Continuing to expand upon its Phantom innovation platform, Hurley is announcing the launch of the first-ever Phantom sandal.

Hurley’s Phantom Sandal channels the various technological advances first seen within Hurley’s award-winning Phantom boardshorts and applies it to footwear. Launching with an initial series of 5 colorways, the Phantom sandal sole features Nike Free technology, with flex grooves designed to mimic how the foot moves. The upper is constructed using spacer mesh technology, which allows for a sandal that is both breathable and washable. The soft, eva footbed molds to the foot, creating conformed comfort for the wearer. The result? The most comfortable, functional sandal to date.

"Phantom innovation is all about second skin, Nike free is all about the bare foot or natural motion," says Ryan Hurley, Creative Director. "Bringing these two schools of thought together seemed very natural."

The Phantom sandal will be available beginning November 15 on Hurley.com as well as select Hurley retailers nationwide. Additional colorways of the sandal will become available Spring 2013.

We are deeply rooted in beach culture; fueled by inclusion, innovation and empowerment of youth; bonded by music and art and passionate about freedom of expression.
U.S. Open of Surfing goes big at Huntington Beach

Huntington Beach, CA - The US Open of Surfing has a storied reputation for going big. This year will only add to that legacy as title sponsor Nike - along with presenting sponsors Hurley, Converse and Nike 6.0 - continue to elevate the event as the world's largest youth culture and action sport festival. With more than 500,000 people in attendance along a 14-acre stretch of sand on the south side of Huntington Beach Pier, the Nike US Open of Surfing showcases the best in surf, skate, BMX, music, fashion and art.

"It's hard to match the experience of the world's best in sports, music and art coming together on the beach in one of action sports' most iconic locations," said Sandy Bodecker, VP Nike Action Sports. "Our commitment this year is to bring the energy from Huntington Beach to even more fans across the world.

The 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing will run from July 30 to August 7. All events are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC or can be viewed live daily at www.usopenofsurfing.com. The event is owned and produced by IMG, the global leader in sports and entertainment.

Anchored by the world's largest professional surfing competition, the $460,000 US Open is a pivotal point on the ASP World Tour for both the men and women. The Men's side will feature a North America ASP Men's Prime event with valuable points on the line right before the coveted ASP Top 32 cut-off. For the women, the US Open of Surfing will witness the final event of the 2011 ASP World Title Tour and crown a women's world champion in Surf City this summer. "I'm really excited to be returning to Huntington Beach to try to defend my US Open title," says Hawaii's Carissa Moore. "It's so fun to be competing in front of so many people!" In addition to the high-stakes Mens and Womens divisions, the US Open will feature a grade four men's and women's Pro Junior as well as the Pacifico Nose Riding Invitational - always a crowd favorite.

The action doesn't stop at the shoreline. On the beach, the event will once again host eye-opening tricks from the most talented and diverse crew of riders from across the globe as they skate in a state-of-the-art skate bowl at Converse Coastal Carnage. And, a stellar crew of BMX riders will push the realm of possibility at the Nike 6.0 HB BMX Pro. The runway will be busy on Thursday, August 4 as five of the nation's top high schools will compete for $25,000 in the Hurley Walk the Walk National Championship - the ultimate youth fashion competition. And the US Open Music Stage will host a soon-to-be-announced lineup of bands that will surely rival last year's Weezer performance in front of 50,000-plus screaming fans.

Couple this with one-of-a-kind retail and brand experiences, more than 100 interactive exhibits, autograph signings, DJs and giveaways, and you have another summer to remember at the Nike US Open of Surfing. Be ready to dive into the madness starting July 30.
