HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (Sunday, August 5, 2012) – Today, Converse announced skateboarder Ben Raybourn as the winner of Converse Coastal Carnage at the 2012 Nike US Open of Surfing. Fearless and always ripping, Raybourn wowed the crowd with his unexpected moves, including a backside 540, fakie to fakie 540, and revert combinations that helped him win first place. Ben Raybourn was among the new generation of skaters that dominated Converse Coastal Carnage including Converse’s own Tom Remillard and Ben Raemers, Curren Caples, Grayson Fletcher and Robbie Russo.
The invite-only, jam-format pro/am competition was followed by a best trick contest where Aaron “Jaws” Homoki won first place with a kickflip melon grab to tail on the shark.
Converse Coastal Carnage returned for its fourth year as the bowl skateboarding component of the Nike US Open of Surfing, the world’s largest action sports festival, produced by IMG, the global leader in sports and entertainment.
After two days of competition and ten qualifying rounds, Raybourn took the top prize of $20,000, with Ben Hatchell taking $15,000 for second place and Curren Caples taking $10,000 for third. Homoki won $3,000 for best trick.
