International recording artist Jessie J welcomed 19,000 runners as they completed Run to the Beat powered by Nike+, London’s unique music half marathon in Greenwich Park.
Runners who were inspired by live DJs and bands at 19 music stations throughout the 13.1-mile course returned to the park to a festival atmosphere and electric set from the BRIT Award winner. Jessie J commented:
“What an amazing event and a fantastic way to inspire people to reach their goals through music. I was so excited to play to all the incredible people coming back into the park after they had just run 13.1 miles and couldn’t believe they found the energy to celebrate in the festival area with me! What an atmosphere!”
Combining running and live music, Run to the Beat, the original London music half marathon, has grown considerably since its debut in 2008. This year,19,000 runners set off from the event’s new home in Greenwich Park, with a desire to realize their potential and reach new goals by setting PBs as they crossed the finish line.
Alongside the thousands of runners, BAFTA Award winning actress and Golden Globe nominee, Carey Mulligan lined up in support of Alzheimer’s Society and brought husband Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons along for support. Mulligan said:
“I have been raising money and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Society in support of my grandmother. Run to the Beat powered by Nike+ is a fantastic stage on which to complete a challenge, have fun and do so in a really unique environment. The music definitely helped to spur me on and to come back into the park to such an incredible atmosphere was great. I forgot about the aches and pains!”
British sprinter Adam Gemili also participated in the race. “I really enjoyed starting the race – there was so much energy from the runners! Music and running are two of my favorite things and it was great to see how much participants were inspired by the tunes being played around the course,” added Gemili.
This year’s Run to the Beat powered by Nike+ boasted a festival-worthy line-up including DJ Goldierocks, fresh from the UK festival circuit; BBC Radio and TV presenter Nihal; original acid house DJ Trevor Fung; and Kerrang! Radio DJ Kate Lawler. With sounds from the best in Urban, R&B, House, Rock, Hip Hop and Dancehall music, runners were motivated every stride of the way.
