Nike Vietnam celebrates tenth anniversary

In commemoration of 10 years of manufacturing in Dong Nai province, Nike Vietnam and its contract footwear manufacturers donate soccer field made of recycled shoes; establish scholarship fund.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (19 May, 2005) – Nike and its nine contract footwear manufacturers presented a special anniversary gift to Dong Nai province today in a community celebration in Dong Nai. The gift is valued at 100,000 USD and represents the first sports surface in Vietnam made of Nike Grind, a product of Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program. Nike will be providing half of the funding for the soccer pitch with the other half being funded by the nine contract footwear manufacturers.

Nike began manufacturing in Vietnam in 1995 with five contract footwear factories and currently works with nine footwear and 30 apparel factories. Over 130,000 Vietnamese citizens are employed by factories manufacturing Nike-branded products. In 2004, total exports of Nike products (both footwear and apparel) accounted for nearly USD 782 million, or 3 percent of Vietnam’s exports.

“In celebration of its 10th anniversary in Vietnam, Nike wanted to express its gratitude to the people of Dong Nai for helping our business grow,” said Amanda Tucker, General Manager of Nike Vietnam. “We hope this soccer field will provide opportunities for factory employees and people of Dong Nai to participate more fully in sports. We look forward to the next ten years and beyond in Vietnam.”

The President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, Madam Cu Thi Hau stated, “We deeply appreciate the efforts Nike and its contract factories make to continually improve conditions for workers. These companies set the example for others to follow.”

In addition to donating the sports field, Nike and these factories worked with Dong Nai officials to organize a Music Festival on May 18. The festival was organized to celebrate both the anniversary and the establishment of a scholarship fund for women. Nearly 3,000 people were expected to attend the event, which provided lucky draw prizes, food and entertainment. Nike and factories are donating VND 100 million for these efforts. Dong Nai officials hope other companies will follow suit and contribute to this new scholarship fund.

Nike footwear is manufactured mostly in Dong Nai province, HCMC and Long An province. All nine contract footwear factories are contributing to the building of the soccer field. JM Kim, Business Director of Tae Kwang Vina, a contract footwear manufacturer said, “We are proud of our relationship with Nike and the people of Dong Nai province for the last ten years. We have learned a lot in the last decade and look forward to continuing the positive relationship with the people of Dong Nai. ”

The soccer field will be built using recycled shoes collected through Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program. Reuse-A-Shoe is part of Nike’s overall strategy to develop sustainable business practices that address the environmental impacts of its day-to-day operations and the entire lifecycle of its products. As part of that commitment, the Reuse-A-Shoe program collects, separates, and grinds up athletic shoes to make Nike Grind material, which is then used in athletic courts, tracks, fields and playground surfaces. Over 16 million pairs of athletic shoes have been recycled since Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program started in 1993. More information on Reuse-A-Shoe can be found at www.nikereuseashoe.com.
