Nike and Calvin Johnson, Jr. Unveil New Signature CJ81 Elite TD Cleat

The sport of football is faster than ever before with athletes training and competing at previously unseen levels. At the top of his game, wide receiver Calvin Johnson, Jr. seems almost superhuman. Standing at 6’5”, 236 lbs., with a 42-inch vertical leap and a 4.35 second 40-yard dash, he is one of the most dynamic athletes in all of modern football.

Johnson's unique combination of size, strength and speed makes him a powerhouse on the football field and requires a new level of thinking when it comes to his gear. To that end, Nike designers worked closely with Johnson to create his new signature Nike CJ81 Elite TD cleat, combining dynamic natural motion engineering in the upper with a new lockdown support system and hybrid collar design for 360 degrees of explosive speed.

With a background in engineering and a scholarly pedigree, Calvin approaches his game and his equipment from an analytical perspective. His collaboration with Nike designers delivers a cleat that contains, protects and unleashes his athleticism. His size, speed and quickness demand a cleat that offers full range of motion like a low-cut version with the performance benefits and ankle support of a mid. With this in mind, Nike designers created a new lightweight proprioceptive collar that allows full freedom of movement without sacrificing lateral ankle stability and support – a mid-cut that plays like a low.

Calvin’s performance is at an all-time high coming off the 2012 season where he wore the Nike CJ81 Elite TD cleat and broke the all-time single-season receiving record previously held by the Jerry Rice.

“Nike took the time to understand exactly what I need in my cleats — from the way I move, to how much support I need, to the way it feels,” Johnson says. “My new CJ81 Elite TD cleat is built for hardcore performance and it looks amazing.”

Based on Johnson’s insight, strong arch support is critical to his ability to explode off the line of scrimmage as well as make quick powerful cuts. The CJ81 Elite TD features a new dynamic midfoot arch strap created to provide side-to-side and heel lock-down as well as cradled support. The strap transitions from the internal medial side of the foot to the outside lateral side, providing a more customized fit around the arch, while the open mesh panel allows for more ventilation in this area. To support his powerful movement, he also needs additional toe and ankle protection so the lock-down fit from the strap helps with those quick, sharp cuts.

The diamond star pattern across the forefoot and side panel of the cleat upper provides a purposeful body-led solution that allows the upper to conform to the foot providing a more customized fit. The tongue also features a large diamond star perforation to help keep the foot cool and dry.

The full-length speed plate includes a Pebax® outsole for lightweight durable strength and a 12-cleat pattern for precision traction and control on real or artificial turf. Four supplemental studs in the forefoot help to enhance traction and when making quick cuts.

Arizona Football Reveals New Look for 2013

Head Coach Rich Rodriguez and the University of Arizona football team today unveiled the Wildcats' new Nike uniforms for the 2013 season.

Nike, Arizona's long-standing apparel and footwear provider, partnered with the program to create a new look for the team. The updated jerseys feature ombre jersey numbers in the school's traditional Cardinal, Navy and White. Nike has produced jerseys and pants in all three of those colors to suit various uniform combinations, complemented by Cardinal, Navy, White and Copper helmets.

Arizona's new football uniforms will be on display during the 2013 Arizona Road Tour with stops in Yuma on May 9, Sierra Vista on May 17 and Pinetop on May 23.

Oregon Ducks' Spring Game Uniforms Honor Service Men and Women

The University of Oregon will take the field on Saturday for their annual Spring Football Game, once again wearing uniforms that honor the men and women who serve our country.

For the past four years, Nike and the University of Oregon have partnered to create a custom-designed uniform for the team’s final Spring scrimmage. This year, both the home and away uniforms have unique details including new nameplates, insignias and patches that tell stories of support and honor. Following the scrimmage, Oregon football players will present their specially made jerseys to approximately 100 uniformed men and women representing all branches of the military.

Nike co-founder and University of Oregon Track & Field Coach Bill Bowerman’s time in the 10th Mountain Division of the U.S. Army provided inspiration for the white away football uniform design. Bowerman’s division wore an all-white uniform and was trained for mountain terrain and arctic conditions.

The olive home uniform design was inspired by Oregonian Art Miller’s lifetime of military service in the 41st Division of the U.S. Army. Miller played linebacker for the Ducks as a freshman in 1939 before joining the National Guard and being called to active service. Trained in military intelligence, Miller served the country for more than 29 years and eventually retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was honored in a pre-game ceremony along with other former Oregon football players who served in the military prior to the Ducks’ Sept. 18, 2010 game vs. Portland State.

The new “titanium carbon” finish on the home uniform helmet features a unique fade from yellow to anthracite in order to elevate the iconic Duck wing pattern on either side.

“This is a proud moment for University of Oregon’s Football program and Nike to give back to the community,” said Todd Van Horne, Global VP and Creative Director for Nike Football. “We are proud to honor both Art Miller and Bill Bowerman with these new uniform designs in order to honor Oregon’s men and women of service.”

Miami Dolphins Unveil New Uniform Design for 2013 Season

Today the Miami Dolphins unveiled the team’s new NFL Nike Elite 51 Uniform design for the 2013 NFL season. The uniform is a completely integrated system of dress featuring a refined color palette as well as updated numbers and fonts that represent South Florida's beautiful environment and the Dolphins' strong team heritage.

Miami was awarded an AFL franchise in 1965 and joined the NFL in 1970, a time when the city was booming with lights, sounds and colors. Travel was becoming more accessible and television presented a bold, eccentric new way to view the game of football. The Miami Dolphins uniform design of that era drew from the vibrant hues of the city — aqua, coral and white — a combination never before seen on the football field.

Minnesota Vikings and Nike Unveil New Uniform Design for 2013 Season

Today Nike and the Minnesota Vikings unveiled the team's new NFL Nike Elite 51 Uniform design for the 2013 NFL season. The uniform is a completely integrated system of dress featuring a modern representation of Viking folklore merged with a deeply respected football culture.

Nike designers and the NFL worked closely with Viking athletes, coaches and administrators to truly understand what makes a Viking, researching the roots of traditional ancient Viking culture and examining the powerful characteristics of the Vikings football team of today.

The environment in Minnesota also served as a foundation for the Vikings new design – a harsh yet beautiful combination of land, water and weather. Vikings — men of adventure, strength and exploration — built their ships and tools with a refined craftsmanship and ornamentation. Accordingly, the uniform design features strong simple lines that reflect the curves in the bow of a Viking ship. The same design lines are seen on ancient Viking horns, which now appear as a shiny accent on the new matte purple football helmets.

“There’s a harshness to the environment in Minnesota and it really creates a strength within those who live here,” said Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway. "The new uniforms are simple and powerful, and this design truly feels like us. I couldn’t be more proud to wear it this season.”

The Vikings color palette stays true to tradition while featuring a refreshed brighter gold accent that allows the purple to stand out. The unique new numbers and font are reminiscent of early Vikings uniform designs but now feature curved serifs that reflect the bow of a Viking ship. The Vikings wordmark is proudly positioned on the front of the jersey.

As a reminder to the athletes as they suit up for the season, the inside back jersey neckline features a simple ornamental design similar to those seen in traditional Norse culture.

Jacksonville Jaguars and Nike Unveil New Uniform Design for 2013

Today Nike and the Jacksonville Jaguars unveiled the team’s new NFL Nike Elite 51 Uniform design for the 2013 NFL season. The uniform is a head-to-toe integrated system of dress with an aggressive, modern design that honors the team’s military fan base and positions the team for the future.

The design renaissance, developed by the Jacksonville Jaguars, the NFL and Nike, centers around the concept of the American dream and realizing success through hard work, ingenuity and leadership – ideals that Jaguars Owner Shahid Khan is working to instill throughout the entire organization. Like Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman, Khan embodies a pioneering innovative spirit while staying true to his humble beginnings. Nike always starts by listening to the voice of the athlete, as did Khan and the Jaguars organization through their design approach in partnership with the NFL.

The new black uniform features teal and gold accents, making a bold statement from top to bottom. Black represents the true characteristics of a jaguar – a feared predator who hunts with stealth precision. Jaguar claw marks across the shoulders, around the neckline and within the stripe pattern on the pant are placed in an aggressive forward-facing position.

The Jaguars proudly salute their hard-working military fan base with a patch placed on the front of the jersey directly over the heart. The patch features a forward-facing Jaguar head as well as the new JAGS wordmark.

West Virginia Unveils New Football Uniforms for 2013 Season

West Virginia football will be sporting a new look in 2013. The Mountaineers will have a total of 27 different uniform combinations to choose from, including the option of a white helmet for the first time since 1979, and a gold helmet for the first time since 1978.

The players will have three different Nike jersey colors to choose from — blue, gold and white — along with pants in the same colors. Stitched inside the back collar of all three jerseys is the West Virginia state motto, Montani Semper Liberi, Latin for Mountaineers are Always Free. A canary is stitched inside the front collar to represent West Virginia’s coal mining heritage (miners once carried canaries into tunnels to detect dangerous gasses).

The new jerseys have a unique number style that is exclusive to West Virginia University, featuring sharp points and edges inspired by a miner’s pickaxe. The school has worn gold and white helmets at various times in its history, most recently in the Bobby Bowden and Frank Cignetti eras of the 1970s. The gold helmets of yesteryear were more of a mustard or old gold finish, not the brigh gold used by WVU athletics today. West Virginia also will continue to sport a blue helmet with the traditional gold flying WV logo popularized by Hall of Fame coach Don Nehlen in 1980. All three helmets will feature the Flying WV symbol and will have a matte finish, which differs from the glossy paint finish on prior WVU helmets.

Head Football Coach Dana Holgorsen unveiled the new uniforms to the team on Friday morning and the first public unveiling took place today at a Mountaineer Athletic Club event before the Gold-Blue spring football game.

“Overall, I like our new look, and I know our players do too. It was time for a change, and I am glad that we could incorporate a little of the state’s pride and history in this set of uniforms,” Holgorsen said.

“You can’t even begin to put a value on how much uniforms and the look of your team plays in the recruiting game. We are pleased with the new look, and now it’s time to turn our attention to summer conditioning and getting prepared for the 2013 season.”

UConn Updates Visual Identity and new Uniforms for Huskies

Today the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics unveiled an updated visual identity and new uniforms for the Huskies. The new identity includes custom typography and numeral set, revised wordmarks, consolidated colors and a modern Husky logo, unifying the UConn brand aesthetic across all 24 intercollegiate sports.

Over the past 15 months, UConn Athletics worked closely with Nike to refresh the brand identity in order to develop a more defined, consistent look that will position the athletic department for the future. UConn Athletics and Nike conducted extensive research, drawing insights from coaches, student athletes, administrators and members of the University community, to ensure UConn’s brand values — Pride, Loyalty, Excellence, Passion and Tradition — were more clearly reflected in their marks.

“We are proud to unveil the complete new visual identity of UConn Athletics,” said UConn Director of Athletics Warde Manuel.

“It was exciting to see many of our student-athletes modeling their new uniforms today, all featuring the primary UCONN identity and new Husky Dog logo in various locations on the team uniforms. Our student-athletes and coaches strongly believe that the new Husky dog logo boldly reflects our values and they are all very excited to wear it in competition and see it displayed prominently in our facilities.”

COLOR PALETTE

When it comes to communicating the UConn Athletics brand, color is of utmost importance. UConn’s colors, known as “National Flag Blue” and white, date back to the 1890s. The addition of red brings depth and distinction to the existing color palette and is reserved for limited accent use only. Blue suggests loyalty and integrity, while white represents confidence and honesty.

TYPOGRAPHY

PRIMARY - The custom typeface, called UConn Extended, is a proprietary bespoke font created for the exclusive use of the University of Connecticut's Division of Athletics.

SECONDARY - The secondary sans-serif typeface, Gotham, was selected to complement the primary typeface. Gotham is part of a family that offers a range of weights, providing great versatility and legibility in print and electronic applications.

WORDMARKS

The updated UConn wordmarks are simple graphic treatments that create a clear, consistent, visually memorable identity. The words UCONN and HUSKIES become visual symbols of University of Connecticut Athletics, with the UCONN word mark standing as the primary representation of the brand.

THE HUSKY LOGO

The Husky logo is a bold transformation built to best represent the UConn student-athlete of today. It signals a consistent foundation — maintaining modern brand equity while reinforcing leadership, confidence and reliability. The Husky is a medium-sized working dog, quick and light on his feet. His body proportions and form reflect his balance of power, speed and endurance. The mark accurately reflects the spirit of UConn Athletics with purpose and conviction.

North Carolina Unveils New Football Uniforms at Spring Game

The University of North Carolina, together with Nike, unveiled a new collection of football uniform designs and colors for the 2013 season at today’s Spring Game. The new uniforms feature Nike Pro Combat technology and the design inspiration speaks to Tar Heel football history. Overall, the updated look reflects the program’s progressive outlook on the game of football.

The Tar Heels will have three jersey options available in 2013, including a Carolina blue top with black numbers, a white jersey with black numbers and a black jersey with Carolina blue numbers. Carolina has three pant options including Carolina blue, white and black.

Nike’s design team worked closely with Tar Heel coaches and student athletes to understand their unique approach to the game, taking inspiration from the Ram mascot, who has appeared with painted blue horns at every game since the early 1920s. The Carolina blue top and white pant will continue as the traditional home uniform. The away uniform is a streamlined look in all white, and the program chose to let the iconic Carolina Blue stand out on an all-black alternate uniform. A new customized font and typeface also serves a functional purpose as they are easier to read and more visible downfield. The stripes on the uniform pant and shoulders reflect the lines of ram horns.

UNC head football coach Larry Fedora reminds his athletes to be “smart, fast and physical” on every play. This mantra is embroidered on the back neckline of the jersey to reinforce Coach’s message to the athletes as they suit up before each game.

“Our kids are excited about the new uniforms,” said Fedora. “When they saw them for the first time they got fired up about wearing them this year. We wanted to design a uniform that connected our team to The Tar Pit, our name for the student section.”

The fully integrated uniform system incorporates the latest in performance innovation. The athlete’s baselayer works in concert with his entire uniform – true innovation from the inside out. Cal Athletics Unveils Updated Brand Identity for Golden Bears

The University of California Athletic Department today reveals an updated visual identity for the Golden Bears, introducing a set of graphics, colors and imagery that pays homage to Cal’s historic past and creates a contemporary look.

Among the changes fans will see are uniforms that portray a coherent theme throughout all sports; consistent use of Cal’s blue and gold colors across a wide range of platforms from uniforms and team performance gear, to signage and advertising; as well as a new Bear logo. One significant element will not be altered: the Golden Bears’ most enduring and iconic mark – the script Cal – will continue as the primary logo for all of the University’s intercollegiate athletic teams.

“We feel we have developed guidelines that respect Cal’s strong tradition and universally-recognized marks,” Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour said. “At the same time, we realize that we need to create a look designed to evolve with our changing world. Through a nearly two-year process, we examined the attributes that define our department and its values, including such words as innovation, character, excellence and commitment. These are the characteristics we want associated with Cal Athletics, and they have helped define our new visual identity.”

Cal Athletics collaborated with the Nike design team to create the new brand identity. The core elements of the unified identity include logo, color and type usage designed to be flexible and keep pace with the athletic department’s evolving needs.

“We have a long history and great partnership with Cal, and it has been exciting to help them achieve their goal of building longevity and consistency across their brand.” said Todd Van Horne, Nike’s Global VP and Design Director for Nike Football.

Cal’s blue and gold colors remain but will now be used across programs to create consistency among team uniforms where variations have developed over time. A third color – gray – will be introduced in some cases to accent Cal’s traditional shades.

The distinct Cal script logo remains the primary mark for the Golden Bears and serves as the main visual identifier.

“Our script logo is recognized around the world by alumni and fans, so we felt it was important to maintain the equity it has built,” Barbour said. “We have worked to embrace the aspects of our visual brand that are firmly entrenched in our department’s culture, while coming up with new marks in areas where we haven’t been as consistent or developed a strong brand presence.”

One example is the Golden Bear logo, where a wide variety of shapes and sizes have been used over the years. In their place will be a single new bear mark portraying a powerful, intelligent force that pays homage to the traditional mascot Cal used more than 100 years ago.

To help build a coherent look for a wide variety of athletic communications, a custom font was designed. Unique word marks for California and Golden Bears using the font form a clear and consistent identity.

Many of the older Cal marks, such as drawings of Oski, are enduring images for Golden Bear fans and will remain available on a wide range of items, such as T-shirts and sweatshirts, but Cal's team uniforms and performance apparel will leverage the updated identity.

“When it comes to developing our brand, consistency is key,” Barbour said. “This work is crucial to our efforts to not only develop but also advance and leverage the brand that is Cal Athletics. Our student-athletes and coaches are excited about the new look and feel of our department, and we hope our fans will share in the enthusiasm.”

Georgia Athletics Introduces New Brand Identity System

The University of Georgia Athletic Association, in partnership with Nike, has introduced a department-wide brand identity system designed to better define and distinguish what is already a nationally prominent collegiate brand.

The Georgia Athletic Association worked in close consultation with Nike over a 15-month period in order to develop an innovative and cohesive athletic brand identity that reflects the unique qualities of Georgia Athletics while promoting a consistent and unified look across all sports.

The updated identity prominently features and reaffirms the traditional Power "G" logo as the primary brand identity. The long-standing color palette of red, black, white and silver has been refined to allow for instant team identification. A newly-developed customized primary and secondary letter and number font will provide a consistent, distinctive look for all Bulldog athletics teams. The graphic "GEORGIA" and "BULLDOGS" wordmarks will become consistent visual symbols of the Georgia Athletics organization, and the Bulldog logo has been refined in order to reflect the strong, iconic characteristics of the animal itself as well as the spirit of The University of Georgia Athletics.

"We're excited about this program's visual guidelines, which embrace the history and tradition of Georgia Athletics and positions the Georgia brand to reach a continually expanding and evolving audience," said UGA Director of Athletics Greg McGarity. "This program will also bring a more consistent look to our logos, uniforms, field markings and other areas where our marks are displayed."

As part of the identity update, the Georgia football team, men's and women's basketball teams and track and field team uniforms will be revised to utilize consistent new fonts and numbers in competition for 2013-14. All other sport teams will phase in new uniform looks over the next two years.

PRIMARY IDENTITY - THE "G" LOGO

The "G" logo is the primary representation of the brand and is used as the main identifying device for athletics. Reinforcement of the primary identity will build equity in Georgia Athletics. In primary or secondary colors, the "G" logo works across all media. The "G" logo is iconic and distinct. It signals a consistent foundation-maintaining brand equity while reinforcing brand leadership, confidence and reliability.

Georgia's "G" logo eventually replaced the old block "G" as the official UGA symbol and it has stood the test of time. The logo made its first appearance on the gridiron in the opening game in 1964 and was an immediate hit with the Georgia fans, especially after Dooley's first three teams were so successful-highlighted by the 1966 SEC Championship.

SECONDARY IDENTITY - THE BULLDOG LOGO

Georgia's mascot dates to 1920 and the school's first president Abraham Baldwin, who was a Yale man (the early buildings on campus were designed from blueprints of the same buildings at Yale). On Nov. 3, 1920, Morgan Blake of the Atlanta Journal wrote about school nicknames: "The Georgia Bulldogs would sound good because there is a certain dignity about a bulldog, as well as ferocity." On Nov. 6, 1920, Atlanta Constitution writer Cliff Wheatley used the name "Bulldogs" in his story five times. The name has been used ever since.

Uga remains one of the best known mascots in the country. The current line began with Uga I, a solid white English Bulldog, the grandpup of a former Georgia mascot who made the trip to the 1943 Rose Bowl. Over the centuries, dogs used for bull-baiting developed stocky bodies and massive heads which typify the breed. The logo is strong, iconic and ferocious, accurately reflecting characteristics of the animal itself as well as the spirit of Georgia Athletics.

TYPOGRAPHY

Type tells a story. The right typeface, used consistently, builds character. The custom font fuses modern foundational forms with universal functionality. To assist in creating a cohesive look for a wide variety of athletic communications, a custom display typeface and numeral set has been designed as an enhancement to the overall identity.

The letterforms are sturdy and powerful, drawing inspiration from the bulldog's anatomy as well as the most notable North Campus fixture-The Arch. The famous cast-iron Arch has become a symbol of the University of Georgia. Patterned after the arch on Georgia's state seal, it was installed in the 1850s when the front of the campus was enclosed with an iron fence.

COLOR PALETTE

When it comes to communicating the Georgia Athletics brand, color is essential. Under the program, consistent color configurations using Georgia's primary and secondary colors can be expanded analogously to build harmonious color palettes and complementary pairings.

Silver britches were an innovation of Coach Wally Butts, who took over as head coach in 1939. The phrase really caught on in the early fifties with a cheer, banners and colorful vests that proclaimed, "Go, You Silver Britches." Coach Vince Dooley redesigned the uniform when he arrived in 1964 and used white pants. He reinstated the silver britches in 1980 just before what turned out to be Georgia's national championship season.

Oregon State Athletics Unveils New Brand Identity

Oregon State University, in partnership with Nike, today introduces a new brand and identity system that sets the visual direction for Beaver Athletics for years to come and modernizes one of the most recognizable brands in all of intercollegiate athletics.

OSU and Nike officials worked on a nearly two-year brand evolution program to refine and update the celebrated marks of the University, honoring the rich tradition of academics and athletics. With the goal of developing an innovative and contemporary athletic brand identity, OSU and Nike worked with student-athletes, coaches, administrators and alumni to compile input on the department’s brand attributes.

“Oregon State Athletics has undergone a tremendous transformation in the last 15 years and our new brand identity is another sign that the Beavers continue to confidently move forward,” said Director of Athletics Bob De Carolis. “The ultimate goal for the rebrand is to attract high-caliber student-athletes to a contemporary brand, while respecting our heritage.”

The new Beaver logo features clean, contemporary lines and a modern, confident and timeless graphic structure. The logo accurately reflects the essence of Oregon State Athletics – Heritage, Strength, Victory, United, Innovation, Tenacity, Dedication and Integrity. Through these brand identity updates, Oregon State creates separation and distinction in the marketplace while respecting the past and representing the future.

“Nike has a long-standing relationship with Oregon State Athletics and it has been an honor to work with them on their new brand identity,” said Todd Van Horne, VP and Creative Director for Nike Football and Baseball. “This new update respects OSU’s history and represents their future while creating separation and distinction in college sports."

As part of the new program, all 17 of OSU’s intercollegiate sports teams will showcase consistent colors, logos, lettering and numerals.

The use of the OS logo will remain part of the University’s overall program, but will be phased out by Athletics.

Secondary Identity – Typography and Word Marks

Block typography has been a fundamental part of OSU’s athletic heritage and speaks to the no-nonsense, hard-working nature of Oregon State athletes, coaches and fans. It is honest, strong, imposing – the perfect foundation for the future of Oregon State Athletics typography. Consistent usage of the typography will support the primary logo and ensure clarity and distinction in all Athletics communications.

Primary Colors

A consistent color palette will allow for instant team identification and enhance the overall impact of the brand identity. Orange — a distinctive color within the Pac-12 Conference —black and white are the official colors for Oregon State Athletics and will remain a constant on all of the school’s intercollegiate teams.

Secondary Colors

A metallic bronze secondary color has been introduced, representing strength and integrity and draws inspiration from the well-used machinery utilized in the timber industry. The addition of bronze brings depth to the existing Oregon State color palette; it will be reserved for limited use only.

Tartan Print

A custom tartan print has been designed to represent the Oregon State Beavers and enrich the overall identity package. The notches in the thick lines reference how beavers use their sharp front teeth to cut down trees, and the white pinstripes are composed of the Oregon State and Beavers wordmarks. Nike debuts first-ever football cleat built using 3D printing technology

The quest for acceleration and speed has long been the north star for athletes across sport, and in order to excel in the game of football, the mastery of these skills is seen in the 40-yard dash. Played out on a national stage in Indianapolis, pro scouts clock 40-yard dash times in order to assess and translate these measurements to a football athlete’s game-time ability.

Today, Nike Football debuted the Nike Vapor Laser Talon with a revolutionary 3D printed plate that will help football athletes perform at their best. In a version built to master the 40, the Nike Vapor Laser Talon weighs a mere 5.6 oz. and is specifically designed to provide optimal traction on football turf and to help athletes maintain their “drive stance” longer.

With more than 40 years of athlete insights and innovation across sport, Nike designers worked with elite trainers within Nike SPARQ as well as long time partner and gold medal sprinter Michael Johnson to understand how he and his team at Michael Johnson Performance train football athletes for the 40. According to MJP Performance Director, Lance Walker, an athlete’s “Zero Step” is a pivotal point that can make or break an athlete’s 40 time. In the moments before that first step hits the turf, his propulsion and acceleration speed are determined. At that point, it’s all about geometry.

“Nike’s new 3D printed plate is contoured to allow football athletes to maintain their drive position longer and more efficiently, helping them accelerate faster through the critical first 10 yards of the 40,” said Johnson. “Translated to the game of football, mastering the Zero Step can mean the difference between a defensive lineman sacking the quarterback or getting blocked.”

The plate of the cleat is crafted using Selective Laser Sintering technology (SLS). It is the sport’s first 3D-printed plate. SLS is a manufacturing technique that uses high-powered lasers to fuse small particles of materials into a three-dimentional shape. Through proprietary material selection, Nike was able to prototype a fully functional plate and traction system within a fraction of the traditional timeframe and at a fraction of the weight. The SLS process allows for the engineering and creation of shapes not possible in traditional manufacturing processes. It also provides the ability to make design updates within hours instead of months to truly accelerate the innovation process to never seen speeds.

“SLS technology has revolutionized the way we design cleat plates – even beyond football – and gives Nike the ability to create solutions that were not possible within the constraints of traditional manufacturing processes,” said Shane Kohatsu, Director of Nike Footwear Innovation.

Buffalo Bills to wear throwback Nike uniforms this weekend

This weekend the Buffalo Bills will wear a unique Nike Football throwback uniform combination modeled after the uniforms that the club wore during their 1964-1965 AFL Championship seasons. The modern interpretation of this historic design was originally showcased during the 50th Anniversary of the AFL back in 2009 and this weekend will be showcased on a Nike NFL Elite 51 chassis. As one of the eight original AFL teams, all elements of the Bills throwback uniform -- jersey, pant, helmet, sock -- differ from the team’s regular season look. Army and Navy to take the field with new uniform designs this weekend

When it comes to football rivalries, none are as steeped in American history as Army and Navy. In honor of the teams’ matchup this weekend, Nike Football has designed two on-field uniforms that honor each school’s rich heritage and drawing inspiration from their formal dress uniforms.

ARMY UNIFORM

Army’s striking black and gold uniforms pay tribute to a year when the Black Knights were unstoppable on all fields of battle: 1944, the year the Army troops won a key strategic victory in WWII’s Battle of the Bulge. The football team at home was on its way to a perfect season and the first of three consecutive national championships. In tribute to Army’s historic victory on the battlefield, a historical re-interpreted West Point battle atlas map of the region where the offensive took place can be seen throughout multiple elements of the uniform, from the jersey to base layer to gloves, all the way down to the inside the cleats.

The helmet also takes on the same 1944 look with the deep gold hue and black stripe along with a small black spade on the side in honor of the 101st Airborne division.

NAVY UNIFORM

Navy’s uniform pays tribute to the traditional dress white uniform – a powerful symbol of professionalism, achievement and authority throughout the organization’s history. The uniform’s clean, white look with black details and gold trim, as well as a new number / letter font, draws inspiration directly from the angular precision and speed of U.S. Navy aircraft. The First Navy Jack, featuring the iconic rattlesnake and “Don't tread on me” phrase, is designed into the base layer.

The helmet design is inspired by a Naval Officer’s cover with a thick gold stripe representing the gold braid, and angled with a downward slope in much the same way the cover is worn.

Nike Football launched Darrelle Revis’ new signature training shoe - the Nike Zoom Revis - available beginning Dec. 1 online and at select Nike Retail locations including Nike Yardline at Champs Sports. The Nike Zoom Revis is a versatile, all-weather, multi-surface “adaptive traction” shoe built for game day preparation and speed.

For the past year, Nike has worked closely with Revis to bring this inspired design to life, creating a training shoe that exceeds the needs of the dynamic athlete striving to improve his game.

Training is the bridge to great performance, built piece by piece, detail by detail. It combines time and hard work with acute determination. From Aliquippa, Penn., to the University of Pittsburgh to New York City, Darrelle Revis stayed focused and can now count himself among the elite. The Nike Zoom Revis design and innovation details speak directly to his journey back to the field – where he’s been, and how he trains for where he’s going.

“The Nike Zoom Revis was built from insights taken directly from the one of the premier cornerbacks in professional football,” said Nike Football Footwear Designer Director Ken Link. “We’ve worked with Darrelle Revis for over a year to be able to deliver new insights around all aspects of his training. This shoe allows athletes to train for speed on different surfaces, in different ways and in different environments leading up to game day.”

Coming off his early season injury, the word “training” still takes on the same meaning. His rehab journey takes on the same level of intensity as his normal training regimen, and the Nike Zoom Revis is built in much the same way -- for speed, agility and versatility.

“I approach my rehab in the same way I approach the game,” Revis said. “My new shoe will help get me to game day by adapting to any movement, any level of intensity and any surface in my training – from the strength to conditioning and beyond.”

Here's a look at the Nike Zoom Revis innovation and design elements:

The bridges in NYC served as a inspiration for the design of the Nike Zoom Revis. A bridge brings together two different types of surfaces and in much the same way, the Nike Zoom Revis allows athletes to train from wet to cold, inside to outside, and turf to grass.
A “traction on demand” element in the outsole engages with the ground to provide the ultimate in traction on any surface when the athlete needs it most. The pattern represents the rivets on a bridge and the Volt colorway represents the bright city lights on the bridges in NYC.
Nike Flywire is incorporated to provide lightweight adaptable support for lateral movement and extreme cuts. The Flywire design equals the number 24 on each side of the strap in roman numerals.
The midfoot strap is placed across the shoe for enhanced lockdown and fit for lateral movement and quick cuts. This dynamic lockdown system and underfoot propulsion helps athletes explode on each first step. Inside the strap, Revis shares his favorite quote: “The only way to handle pressure is to apply it.”
The visible full length Zoom Air sole provides an ultra responsive ride.
The internal form fitting bootie for a comfortable fit. The word “FAMILY” is placed on the inside of the tongue in honor of Revis’ commitment to them.
The TPU heel clip is included to lock the heel into place.
Mesh underlays keep the shoe lightweight and breathable.

Nike launches Calvin Johnson's CJ81 Collection inspired by Megatron

In celebration of Thanksgiving weekend, Nike celebrates a long-standing weekend of football and an athlete that has truly transformed the game. The Nike CJ81 Collection Inspired by Megatron speaks to WR Calvin Johnson’s rare combination of physical talent and mental toughness. This menacing combination creates a prototypical specimen that undoubtedly deserves a moniker like Megatron. Much like the fictional character, Johnson relies on his uncanny ability to pull out an arsenal of physical strengths or “weapons” based on anything he encounters on the field.

The collection, inspired by the Hasbro Transformers character created in 1984, features iconic Nike silhouettes across lifestyle, training and performance including the CJ81 Nike Air Max Flyposite, CJ81 Nike Huarache Free Shield, CJ81 Nike Vapor Jet Glove 2.0, CJ81 Nike Vapor Football Sock, CJ81 Nike True Adjustable Hat, and the CJ81 Nike KO Hoody.

Merging the old and new, the traditional Transformers grid pattern and colors of black, silver, purple and blue from the original Megatron packaging, help highlight the CJ81 logo design.

Ohio State uniforms deliver innovation while honoring the past

In 1967, Ohio State University football coach Woody Hayes started an iconic OSU football tradition, redesigning the team’s uniform and helmet using the most innovative materials available at the time. He and his strength coach Ernie Biggs changed the jerseys and began a tradition of adding Buckeye leaf decals to the players’ helmets to reward big plays on the field. The Buckeyes won the National Championship wearing the new uniforms the following year.

In honor of the undefeated team's big game this weekend, Nike Football is carrying OSU’s history of innovation another step forward with an updated uniform design and new fabrication. The modern, integrated uniform system builds on the school's rich heritage, highlighting an updated version of the classic Buckeye Stripe along with the color silver. Both design elements are infused throughout the uniform from the helmet to cleat, combining an innovative look with a nod to the team's long-standing legacy. The iconic Buckeye leaf decals have also been updated in chrome and added to the back of the baselayer.

From head to toe, this new uniform is designed for speed with the inclusion of Nike Chain Maille Mesh into the jersey -- a lightweight, ultra-breathable material that emphasizes improved thermoregulation. This new fabrication is incorporated into the back and under the arms of the jersey for exceptional ventilation without sacrificing durability.

The Nike Pro Combat Hyperwarm baselayer also keeps the body regulated for cold weather with breathability, water resistance and a streamlined fit. The Hyperwarm baselayer top features a new speed-focused design to coordinate with the uniform.

The full, integrated uniform system also features:

Washington Redskins Unveil New Nike Anniversary Uniform

Redskins’ owner Dan Snyder and his staff worked closely with Nike to create a look that spoke to the club’s unique heritage while highlighting several key details that helped defined the team’s history. The alternate “anniversary” uniform is a balance between history and tradition featuring a rich darker color palate and updated numbering system. It is a modern interpretation of those worn back in 1937 - a year signifying the team’s move from Boston to Washington, D.C. as well as their first National Championship. The patch on the shoulder is one that was worn in early team history. The design also pays tribute to 1937 QB “Slingin” Sammy Baugh, who in his first year in the league led the newly relocated Redskins to their first National Championship. Sammy was the last surviving member of the 1963 17-member charter class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and has been honored by the Redskins with the retirement of his #33 jersey - the only number the team has ever officially retired.

“The Redskins are an amazing organization focused on team, unity and tradition. This new alternate uniform design for the Redskins is a very special one that truly speaks to the team’s long, rich history” said Nike Football Creative Director Todd Van Horne. “We have truly enjoyed working with Dan Snyder and his team on this project and look forward to seeing the new Elite 51 uniform system on the field this season.”

To complete the look, the helmet features a unique leather-like finish and the words “Team, Effort, Tradition” are embroidered on the inside of the neckline serving as a reminder to each athlete of what it means to be a Redskin.

“In honor of 80 years of rich tradition this anniversary uniform displays our heritage” said Daniel M. Snyder. “We hope that it will bring back great memories to our fans.”

Designed and engineered from the inside out, the new uniform focuses on creating a system where the baselayer, padding, jersey and pant work in concert. Lightweight padding is also integrated directly into the crucial “hit zones” in the baselayer. New innovations include integrating Flywire technology into the neckline to reduce weight and provide lockdown fit over pads, increasing sleeve articulation for better range of motion, and integrating new four-way stretch fabrication to provide a streamlined shrink-wrap fit.

Nike Unveils Oregon Ducks' White Vapor Colorway

The Oregon Ducks' ever-evolving football uniform is only trumped by their on-field performance. As the gold-standard for Nike Football’s most advanced uniform innovation, the Ducks will take on USC in a special edition White Vapor version of Nike’s fully integrated system of dress. The new helmet design features a white textured finish designed to absorb the light while offsetting the carbon fiber wings.

The all-white colorway has long been a part of the Ducks’ uniform arsenal. While they traditionally showcase an array of bright color combinations, the white colorway makes a simple yet bold statement highlighting speed, quickness and zero distractions.

The uniform technology works in tandem with its design while providing enhanced thermoregulation and more durability with the inclusion of Nike Chain Maille Mesh -- a lightweight, ultra-breathable material -- used in both the jersey and pant.

"The White Vapor uniform has zero distractions, making the players feel and look faster," said Todd Van Horne, Nike's Creative Director for Football. "The all-white colorway creates a foundation that highlights the uniform’s innovation. About the uniform chassis

Nike Chain Maille Mesh technology is the ultimate in breathable uniform design. This new material, as debuted in last season’s Rose Bowl game, is incorporated into the back and under the arms in the jersey, as well as down the sides of the pant for exceptional ventilation without sacrificing durability. It emphasizes improved thermoregulation when coupled with the Nike Pro Combat Deflex padding layer.

The uniform’s baselayer is constructed with fabric selected for its ability to help keep the body cool and wick away sweat – making the entire uniform system, and player, lighter and dryer. Nike Pro Combat Deflex padding, which eliminates bulk, has been added to offer optimal low-profile lightweight impact protection specifically throughout the crucial “hit zone” between the knees and shoulders. It is also integrated in the hip and knee areas of the pant for crucial impact protection that stays in place.

The Nike Flywire collar eliminates two layers of fabric for improved breathability, providing a more stable anchor to keep the jersey in place. The uniform also features a completely re-designed number system was inspired by the shape of a mallard’s feathers. These larger, bolder numbers maximize legibility on-field and accent the uniform colorway. Even the new wing design on the shoulders is specifically engineered to provide maximum strength in the shoulder area while the spacing of the feathers allows for even greater mobility.

Pittsburgh Steelers to show off unique throwback uniforms this weekend

The Pittsburgh Steelers will show off their new Nike throwback uniforms when they take on the Washington Redskins at home this weekend. In honor of the team’s 80th anniversary, this uniform is a replica of the team’s 1934 design and has not been worn on the field since that season.

The uniform provides a unique look into the team’s history: the Steelers were known then as the Pittsburgh Pirates, wearing the black and gold striped jersey and matching socks.

The Steelers regularly perform in the highly innovative Nike Elite 51 uniform. For this version, they have chosen their previous uniform fabrication.

The uniforms will also be worn again later in the season.
