Environmentally Preferred Materials

Environmentally preferred materials (EPMs) are weighted heavily in our Considered Index. We work with our suppliers to increase the availability and use of EPMs that do not compromise on aesthetics, performance, price, compliance or sustainability. We define EPMs as materials that significantly reduce the environmental impact of a product through better chemistry, lower resource intensity, less waste, and/or recyclability. They include materials that are recycled, renewable or bio-based, or chemically optimized.

To identify EPMs, Nike developed a Material Analysis Tool (MAT) based on a lifecycle assessment approach to evaluate and rank our material choices. Each material receives a numeric value that feeds into a sustainability score for our products.
