Tennis mavericks Roger Federer, Li Na, Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova, Bernard Tomic, and Serena Williams hit the courts of Melbourne with Nike's latest innovations that offer protection from the elements in style. Click through the gallery to see the looks each athlete will wear down under.

Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal’s aggressive style of play demands an arresting look. He’s found it with the color-driven Nike Rafa Finals Crew. A fractured-geometric print over the shoulders distracts the opponent’s attention while the Dri-FIT jersey and mesh fabrics mean a lightweight, non-restrictive fit that will help keep the dynamic Spaniard cool no matter what the temperature. His surf wear-inspired shorts are quick dry, lightweight and use a Velcro and hook and eye closure to remove the weight and bulk of a zipper and offer an adaptive fit.

Roger Federer

A four-time winner on the sweltering courts of Melbourne, Roger Federer will cut a bold figure in his high-performance RF Smash Stripe Polo, made with Dri-FIT UV jersey fabric that provides sun protection and perspiration wicking. A dramatic block of color heralds Federer’s timeless and powerful style. The striking two-tone design continues with the sleek Nike Smash Woven Shorts, providing a traditional, polished look and pioneering fit and performance features.

Li Na

Last season’s successes lifted Li Na up into the tennis stratosphere and made her one of China’s national heroes. She’ll start her 2012 quest for further glory in a white, clean-cut, Nike Pure Tennis top. A unique plunging neckline and two layers of fabric give this top a beautiful, modern feel and finish. The top combines a simple, clean style with Nike’s advanced Dri-FIT material for the ultimate in on-court comfort. With sweet cap sleeves and a flirty, feminine neckline, this high-performance piece works well with Li Na’s Nike Rally Knit Skirt. The crisp look continues in an old royal Nike Rally Knit Skirt with an appealing ruffle and contrasting black piping.

Maria Sharapova

It’s all about elevating design, craft and performance for fashion icon and tennis superstar Maria Sharapova. She’s starting off the 2012 season in a sleek white modernized dress with electric-green racerback straps. Named the Statement Slam Dress, the carefully constructed vents with mesh inlays along the bodice reflect the breathable gills of a powerful shark or super-charged racecar and help keep Sharapova cool and ready to attack. Contrast color in the mesh becomes a stealth weapon to distract the opponent.

Bernard Tomic

At barely 19, Bernard Tomic hopes for a smashing breakthrough on his nation’s highest courts. The Gold Coast native is the highest ranked male Australian, and the youngest in top 100. He’s wearing the boldly graphic Contemporary Statement Top, designed for cool comfort with Dri-FIT pinhole mesh on the back and shoulders.

Serena Williams

To pay tribute to Nike’s 40th anniversary of tennis in 2012, designers asked five-time singles champ and fashionista Serena Williams to look back and select her most favorite dresses for modern interpretations. Her gorgeous Nike Rally Statement dress is directly inspired by one of her memorable all-white dresses. specifically a 2004 gladiator style. With eye-catching, white piping around the neck and bust line, this mega blue dress uses complex shaping, stitching and pleating to create a flattering fit and fluid movement on the court. Sheer power mesh along sides helps Williams to stay dry and comfortable during long matches, while the Inner Definition bra uses molded cups for a smooth look and superior support.
