Paul 'Gazza' Gascoigne Launches 'Faces of England' for Umbro

London, England, 25th May 2012: Paul Gascoigne, one of the finest footballing talents this country has ever produced, was in London today on the eve of England’s Euro 2012 warm-up match against Norway to show his support to the team’s tournament hopes.

Gazza, capped 57 times, last appeared in an England shirt against Belgium in 1998 and now he wears the Three Lions once more as England gears up for Europe’s biggest football tournament. One of his most memorable performances for England was scoring a spectacular volley in a 2-0 win against Scotland at Wembley in Euro 96.

Today Gazza, who celebrates his 45th birthday on Sunday [27th May], unveiled a giant 13m x 10m image of himself which plays up to the famous ‘tongue out’ pose from his playing days.

The image of Gazza is the first in a series of ‘Faces of England’ from official England kit suppliers Umbro which celebrates icons of England. Over the coming months, other famous figures that represent English culture will appear on the billboard on Old Street, London.

Gazza is pictured proudly wearing the current England Home shirt, tailored by Umbro, which will be worn by the England squad in Poland and the Ukraine.

The England home shirt is inspired by the red and white of the St George’s flag and the striping detail under the collar is a nod to the Umbro jacket worn by England manager Sir Alf Ramsey during England’s 1966 World Cup winning campaign.

Gazza said: “It brings a lump to my throat when I think about how proud I am to have played for my country. There’s nothing better than representing England - the buzz of the crowd and feeling the support of the whole country. Wearing the shirt again has brought back many happy memories and seeing myself on display in the capital, being celebrated as an icon of England is truly an honour.”

Gazza also joked: “I bumped into Colin Hendry recently and it [the game against Scotland] felt like only yesterday that I left him on the turf at Wembley. We delivered in style that day and I wish the current squad all the best this summer and hope they wear the shirt with pride.”

Trevor Cairns, Global Chief Marketing Officer for Umbro, said: “‘Faces of England’ will celebrate icons of English culture and in Gazza we’ve chosen one of the most entertaining and passionate players this country has ever seen.

“The pride which Paul displays when talking about playing for England proves he was the perfect choice. He has quite literally given blood, sweat and tears in the Three Lions shirt and if you’re an England fan, you can ask for nothing more.”

Images of Gazza in the England home shirt will also appear on fly postering sites across England.

Visit www.umbro.com/facesofengland to watch Gazza’s thoughts on playing for England.

THE ST GEORGE COLLECTION, TAILORED BY UMBRO

Umbro, the official kit supplier to the England team, has released the St George Collection, an on and off field range which will be used by the England squad at this summer’s European Championships.

The red and white of the St George’s flag is fundamental to this patriotic collection as is the striping detail inspired by the Umbro jacket worn by England manager Sir Alf Ramsey and which features on the current home kit.

The whole St George Collection is underpinned by Umbro’s commitment to delivering a smart look for on and off the field.

On the pitch, Umbro’s signature three pro boots; the Geometra (worn by England and Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart), the Speciali 3 and the GT 2 have all been redesigned incorporating the distinctive St. George collection design.

As well as the Geometra boots, Joe Hart’s Geometra Pro gloves have been given the St George Collection makeover. Tailored for use at the highest level of the game, the Geometra gloves include newly developed hyper-extreme latex for improved grip teamed with an extended palm for greater ball control. The striping detail on the gloves doubles up as an embossed structured punch zone with a silicon coating to allow keepers the cleanest possible punch.

The new Neo 2 Pro, which will be used in England matches at Wembley, features an innovative 14-panel design uses fewer seams and allows for cleaner and larger strike zones. It is crafted with materials which allow maximum shape retention and consistency when striking the ball to give a faster and truer flight. The new graphic design offers better in-game visibility, allowing players to judge the amount of speed and spin on the ball with greater ease.

Off the field, the Umbro premium leather luggage ensures the England team looks as smart off the field as they do on it. The luggage, which players will use during the tournament, is crafted with fine black leather and includes subtle red design details. Three headline products make up England’s high quality leather travelling range; the wash bag, messenger bag and weekender bag.

Joe Hart, Manchester City and England, said: “Umbro is known for producing smart gear and the St George Collection is a perfect example of that.

“It is an incredible feeling to step on to the football pitch and represent your country, and it’s great to see this collection embracing the colours of the St. George’s flag. The new Umbro Geometra boots and gloves complete the head to toe look for me and I love it.”

The St George Collection is available from www.umbro.com

Flying the flag for England: Umbro reveals new white and red England Home kit

Manchester, England, February 2012: Taking its lead from the St. George’s flag, the new England Home kit, tailored by Umbro, features a patriotic white and red only design.

In a first for the England Home kit, the Three Lions crest, which has previously featured blue and red, appears entirely in red so the strip is a representation of the St. George’s flag in its purest form.

Launching ahead of this summer’s 2012 European Championships, the new Home kit will be worn by the Senior team for the first time on 29th February when the England team take on Holland at Wembley in front of 90,000 fans. The England U21 team will also play in the new strip on the same night when they take on Belgium U21s at the Riverside Stadium.

A key feature of the kit is the red striping detail inspired by the famous stripes on the Umbro jacket worn by England manager Sir Alf Ramsey during England’s 1966 World Cup winning campaign. The striping features on all elements of the kit [shirt, shorts, and socks] and is prominent on the reverse of the players’ collar and is clearly visible when turned up.

In keeping with Umbro’s football smart approach, the kit features a top button to create a football ‘shirt’ in the truest sense. Finished in brushed cotton, the shirt has a classic, smart aesthetic as well as performance benefits which include keeping the wearer comfortable and dry.

Retaining a classic style edge, the shirt has a shaped drop hem, giving a tailored fit that will sit with the natural posture of the body when standing. True to its tailoring heritage, Umbro continues to provide shirts in chest sizes so that each England fan can experience a tailored fit.

The shorts and socks are white and also feature the red striping detail. A red change short will also be available later in the season. As a whole, the kit has been designed to provide maximum performance and movement having been crafted using Umbro’s look smart, play smart ethos.

The new England Home goalkeeper’s kit takes inspiration directly from the centre of the flag with full red colouring and the design details in white. Containing an interlocking pattern of red England crosses it aims to ensure Joe Hart stands out on the pitch.

The goalkeeper shirt sleeve has been constructed using a polyester/elastine blend that creates a tight yet flexible fit and offers maximum compatibility with goalkeeping gloves. Crafted in line with the whole England kit, the goalkeeping kit comes complete with Umbro’s iconic stripe rib and is tailored with a classic football smart look.

The wider on-pitch range includes a white and red Umbro Anthem Jacket, a style made famous by the legendary Sir Alf Ramsey. It will be worn by the team as they walk out onto the pitch and features the same red woven ribbing detail as the Home kit.

The new England Home Kit is available from 29th February from umbro.com.

Icons Re-issue: Umbro brings back classic sportswear

Umbro is celebrating 88 years of stylish sportswear with a four piece collection that pays homage to its unique football tailoring heritage. Icons Re-issue is a tribute to the classic silhouettes which have embodied Umbro’s reputation for crafting smart football garments.

For Spring Summer 2012, Umbro has reimaged four iconic pieces which pay tribute to its founder, Harold Humphreys’ vision of tailored sportswear.

Icons Re-issue is based on four of Umbro’s most celebrated silhouettes: the ’66 Anthem Jacket, the Mexico ’70 Jersey, the Taped Track Jacket and Drill Top. Each piece, a stitch by stitch recreation of the original, takes you on a journey through Umbro’s incredible history with the most modern refinement. A truly football smart collection.

Featured in the collection is the Umbro ‘66 Anthem Jacket. Forever associated with England’s finest victory and worn by one of England’s all-time greats, Sir Alf Ramsey. The iconic jacket features a 100% stonewash cotton twill fabric and all the unique details remain; red, white and blue rib stripes on the hem, cuff and collar as well as the embroidered Three Lions crest which sits proudly on the chest. On the back is ‘England’ appliqué lettering applied with accurate zigzag stitching. In essence- a true football classic.

The Mexico ‘70 Jersey made its debut in what is widely regarded as the greatest ever World Cup Finals and the first to be broadcast in colour. Designed to allow players to play in extreme heat, the jersey took its place in football history when England took on Brazil in the quarter finals in Guadalajara. Immaculately reproduced, the Mexico ’70 Jersey is 100% cotton mesh, with a classic crew neck collar, crafted from the same fabric as the original.

The Taped Track Jacket signalled a movement into a new era of sports branded clothing, proudly led by Umbro. True to the original, the jacket features the famous ‘running diamond’ taping down the sleeves and the faded Umbro logo on the chest. The classic Umbro taping hit the fashion spotlight in the 1970s, when England’s finest wore the Taped Track Jacket. The running diamond detail was well and truly placed on the football map following Scotland’s Archie Gemmill wonder goal against Holland in the 1978 World Cup.

The classic Drill Top, one of the most loved pieces of football apparel, completes the Icons Re-Issue collection. The Umbro Drill Top has been reinterpreted many times over the years and worn by icons both off and on the pitch. This version is a recreation of a style seen in the late 80s and early 90s and the inspiration for Umbro’s New Blue collection. Made from 100% washed cotton twill, the Drill Top has a unique ability to get better with age, wash after wash.

Loyally reinterpreted and staying true to the tailoring aesthetics established by Harold Humphreys, the Umbro Icons Re-Issue collection is available from www.umbro.com. Each piece is beautifully presented in a premium boot bag.

Umbro launches Speciali 3: a contemporary take on its classic boot

Manchester, England, January 2012: Following the launch of the Speciali 92 collection to celebrate 20 years of greatness, Umbro has released the Speciali 3 – a contemporary take on the classic Speciali football boot.

With the Speciali 3 Pro, Umbro celebrates the craft, quality, authenticity and football tailoring it is known for.

The Speciali traditions of comfort and fit, delivered with style, are at the core of the Speciali 3’s design. Epitomising this is the premium soft leather upper, a constant feature of the Speciali boot. This extends around the medial midfoot for uninterrupted touch and feel of the ball, aiding fit and comfort to create a truly tailored boot.

The classic Speciali A-frame remains as an internal reinforcement holding the midfoot in place. The A-frame has been an integral part of the Speciali boot since 1992 and continues to evolve to meet modern performance needs.

The boot features Clarino™, a suede grip sock that aids comfort and has much greater breathability than standard synthetic materials. Poron™ is a memory foam insert on the rear tongue, a highly durable material that doesn’t rot when wet.

Additional features of the new Speciali 3 Pro include:

- The boot is anatomically lasted to provide better support to the wearer

- Asymmetric eyestay lacing to maximise touch surface on the vamp and medial side

- A-frame shape inspired stitching helps minimise stretch in this critical lateral forefoot area

- Full grain leather used on collar and heel

- The classic Speciali twin stripes have been refreshed for 2012

- Blades have been added to the plate on the HG boot to provide added stability and traction, while keeping the conical shape for hard ground conditions

- A wider flex channel on the outsole to improve articulation, forefoot flex and toe off

- Tongue construction is a “dupalon” fused lining for a lightweight feel

The Speciali 3 Pro is designed and styled for the purist – the player who wants to look smart and play smart. .Speciali wearers include:

- Andy Carroll, Liverpool and England

- Darren Bent, Aston Villa and England

- Pepe, Real Madrid and Portugal

- Michael Dawson, Tottenham Hotspur and England

- Michael Owen, Manchester United

- Juan Vargas, Fiorentina and Peru

- Andoni Iraola, Athletic Bilbao

- Eric Dier, Sporting Lisbon

Andy Carroll said: “I love playing in the Umbro Speciali boot - it’s become an icon of the game, worn by many great players. I like the classic style of the boot and it’s really comfortable to wear. I feel a sense of pride when stepping out on to the pitch and the Speciali 3 Pro continues the evolution of this great boot.”

New Blue: Classic Umbro piece inspires lifestyle range

(Manchester, England) A unique piece from the Umbro archives has provided the inspiration for New Blue, a capsule collection of sportswear apparel for Autumn Winter 2011.

It was a drill top, which had experienced a lifetime of wear and tear, donated by a member of the public to the Umbro archives that inspired the New Blue approach.

The product’s weathered appearance caused the design team to set about creating a product line which reflected the worn and distressed look of the garment.

Since its introduction in the 1950s, the Umbro drill top has become an iconic symbol on the pitch and has been worn by some of football’s greats. It has seen many manifestations throughout the years however it is widely remembered for being blue in colour with collars and ribbing.

For the New Blue collection, a selection of key Umbro silhouettes have been given the textured denim-like appearance that alludes to the years of continuous training, washing and hardwearing the original drill would have gone through in its years on and off the pitch.

The New Blue range includes classic Umbro designs: the Woven Anthem Jacket, the Track Jacket, the Crew Sweat and the Graphic Tee make up the range.

Timeless Umbro trims and graphic applications such as the running diamond taping and the diamond logo print remain, but like the drill, these have been given a distressed look.

The New Blue AW11 collection is available now from www.umbro.com

The Speciali has stayed true to Umbro’s football boot ethos throughout its 20 years with style, fit and comfort being at the very core of its design. These attributes that the Speciali has built its status upon, including the premium soft leather, have gone into creating the five-piece limited edition Speciali 92 range.

Speciali 92 is a crafted, premium leather range, which celebrates the iconic past of the Speciali boot through Umbro’s contemporary English football tailoring lens.

The hero piece within the range is Umbro’s classic silhouette, the Anthem Jacket, which has been put through a Speciali filter, offering a fusion of two iconic pieces of sportswear. The jacket is crafted from soft leather and the lining features a digital print, which details key Speciali moments. The Anthem Jacket is available in limited numbers of only 92.

Umbro’s lifestyle footwear silhouette, the Milton, is given the Speciali makeover and draws inspiration from the classic boot. Available in limited numbers of 1,992, this latest interpretation of the Milton takes some of the most recognisable details from the Speciali and uses them to create a contemporary lifestyle shoe. The Speciali 92 Milton features a suede toecap and is completed with a flip tongue, a design detail that reflects the original 1992 boot.

The Speciali ’92 Pro Boot is aesthetically inspired by the original 1992 Speciali and has been brought up to date with modern innovations for today’s game. The football boot features the full, soft leather upper, which the Speciali is known for, to aid comfort and fit. Conical studs and a flex groove plate are retained from the original boot with the addition of blades at the heel for added traction. Only 1,992 pairs will be available, offering a unique blend of Specialis past and present.

A soft leather weekend bag and a leather ball, both made in limited numbers of 92, make up the five-piece collection.

Umbro introduces the Geometra football boot

Manchester, England, 2011: Umbro has announced a new addition to its football boot range with the launch of Geometra, specifically designed for the visionary in the team, the player who keeps calm on the field and always finds their pass.

The Geometra combines the comfort and fit of Umbro’s English football tailoring heritage with the latest in football performance technology.

The football boot features a memory foam ‘pass pad’ on its instep to aid ball control. A silicon-bonded grip zone has been added to the toe to help touch and feel and allow the wearer to add increased loft and spin to the ball.

Also unique to the Umbro Geometra football boot is the specialist sole with a new stud configuration. This pivot zone pressure point takes inspiration from a squash shoe and allows players to turn away from trouble in even the smallest areas.

Full grain ceramic leather, thicker than average leather, is used for the Umbro Geometra boot to build more strength into the pass and provide more protection. Feet are further safeguarded by the inclusion of a solid heel wrap and stabiliser to help resist a crunching tackle.

Additional features include laces built into the side of the football boot creating a large strike zone and allowing for a wider opening to the boot to aid comfort. Extra grip on the foot is added by a built in sock liner that hugs the foot to create the comfort that is paramount to Umbro football tailoring.

Manchester-based Umbro has been at the heart of English football for 87 years and has applied all this experience and craftsmanship to its boots. The Geometra lines up alongside the world-renowned Umbro Speciali and the Umbro GT to form a range of boots which caters for all types of player.

Each Umbro boot is designed with a different player in mind. The Geometra boot is built for the visionary; the player that stays calm and controlled on the pitch and always finds their pass. The Umbro GT celebrates speed, attitude and individuality whereas the Speciali is built for the purist – the lover of craft and quality.

England midfielder Jordan Henderson, commented: “The new Umbro Geometra boot is perfectly built for my game. The memory foam pass pad and bonded grip zone help with my passing and the large strike zone is ideal for shooting. As well as being comfortable, the boots keep your feet protected which is really important as a midfielder. I can’t wait to play in the Geometra boot over the season ahead.”

The following players will be wearing the Umbro Geometra over the 2011/2012 football season:

Jordan Henderson – Liverpool and England

Umbro reveals new England Away kit

(Manchester, England, July 2011) Umbro has combined English smartness with modern football tailoring to create the new England Away kit in a classic navy suiting colour.

The new Away kit, which will be worn by the England senior squad for the first time against Holland on August 10th, sees a return to blue – a colour which is synonymous with England and was first worn by the England team in the 1930s.

Inspiration for the new shirt was taken from the blue caps given to England players as well as the original British passports, which were navy in colour.

Similar to the design of the 2009 England Home shirt, the new away kit features a smart regatta blue pop out collar, detail inherent in Umbro football tailoring, whilst combining the performance elements required for the modern game.

Lightweight and breathable, the shirt uses mesh technology to increase the air flow to the body, updating a style that was first introduced in 1970 for the Mexico World Cup. The shirt is made using full polyester on the inside to help draw sweat away from the body and features a cotton outer to provide a smart appearance.

Featuring a Raglan sleeve and darting over the top edge of the shoulder, the navy shirt maintains its shape whilst allowing freedom across the body.

“Myself and the England lads can’t wait to pull the new England Away kit on for the first time against Holland. Representing your country is one of the greatest honours for a player. Looking good gives you confidence on the pitch and it is great to have a new look with the navy blue,” commented England captain John Terry.

The shorts, in a lighter, blue regatta colouring, feature a side stretch mesh panel to aid ventilation. The short is straightened off to allow easy movement of the upper leg. The socks combine the blue of the shirt and short to complete the smart kit.

England manager Fabio Capello commented: “Blue is a strong colour and one which is part of the history and future of the England team. We face many difficult fixtures away from home this year and it is important for the team to look smart on and off the pitch.

The new Away goalkeeper’s shirt references the strong graphical formations used on previous England kits and carries a formation of interlocking crosses which represent the flag of St George.

The shirt is built from the latest in fabric technology in order to provide goalkeepers like Joe Hart with the best possible help on the pitch. With a simple, comfortable collar, the goalkeeper shirt is crafted from a special cotton fabric with panels built for stretch and movement, whilst the arms feature the same 360º pivot armhole to offer keepers maximum movement.

The lower part of the arm on the shirt offers a tight fit offering articulation and compatibility with goalkeeping gloves.

England goalkeeper Joe Hart said: “The new goalie Away shirt is lively but I really like it and am looking forward to wearing it against Holland. The strip fits really well and it reminds me of some of the goalkeeper kits I used to see on my heroes when I was a kid.”

The wider on-pitch range will include two new Umbro anthem jackets – regatta blue for coaching staff and navy for players – which will be worn when they walk out onto the pitch. Tailored to compliment the kit and provide comfort for the players, the anthem jacket stays in line with the sense of smartness provided by the new kit.

In keeping with its tailoring heritage, Umbro has continued to provide shirts in chest sizes so that each England fan can experience a tailored fit.

The kit will be worn by every level of the England team from juniors to seniors including the women’s team.

The new England Away kit is available to pre-order now and will go on sale August 10, 2011.

Umbro and Aitor Throup Introduce Archive Research Project

Manchester, England 2011: Umbro, in collaboration with the critically acclaimed conceptual designer Aitor Throup, has delved into its extensive archive to launch the Archive Research Project (A.R.P.). Taking inspiration from iconic Umbro football garments, spanning the last 87 years, A.R.P. represents design innovation and style, whilst maintaining Umbro’s English football tailoring heritage.

Since 2008 Umbro and Aitor Throup have collaborated together, specifically on the re-launch of the England Home kit in 2009 and more recently the England Away kit in 2010. It was during the 2009 kit project that Umbro and Aitor delved into the heritage of the brand and created an England football shirt that redefined replica by fusing football performance and tailoring.

The new Umbro A.R.P. collection is an innovative collection engineered for football performance and curated for lifestyle. It’s about the coming together of the past and the future; reinterpreting classic Umbro designs, such as the 1966 ‘Ramsey’ jacket and the brand’s iconic ‘Aztec’ football shirt as worn by England in ‘66, in a way that shatters the mould of previous construction methods of such garments.

The collection of seven unique garments really come into their own when examined from the inside out, mirroring the ‘inside-out’ design and construction philosophy pioneered by Aitor Throup. This concept is the foundation of the way Throup approaches his work. For many fashion designers the opposite is often the case, where the exterior shell becomes the main focus. Throup, however, investigates the interior form, studying the body and its movement. He investigates scientific elements such as thermal studies, identifying specific parts of the body, which require more breathability, as well as extra stretch needed in key areas for ultimate performance and comfort.

The highlight piece from the collection is the A.R.P. Ramsey Jacket. The Ramsey displays the new wave construction on the inside of the garment with an illuminating white seam detail, completely thermo-sealed, which shows the complex architectural nature of the construction. Details include an ergonomic detachable hood with a unique fastening system and an incorporated pocket, specially designed to keep essential possessions safe whilst on the pitch. The Aztec Jersey, Diamond Tape Track Jacket, 1970 World Cup Jersey, Drill Top, Drill Pant and ‘Barcelona’ Short have been re-worked to include sleek design details, true to Umbro’s original tailoring roots. All materials are lightweight and breathable and the Swiss made Schoeller 3xDRY® fabric gives an extreme-waterproof-finish.

“Umbro was founded back in 1924 and our vast archive consists of football garments which have been a part of English football for 87 years. A.R.P. signifies a clash of tailoring with modern construction techniques, our heritage with innovation, performance with lifestyle. In collaboration with Aitor Throup, A.R.P. is a fascinating reinvention of the brand’s iconic silhouettes, redefined in a modern lifestyle collection.”

-- Andy Walker - Vice President of Design at Umbro

"When I began working with Umbro in 2008, we set out to redefine football kits, by using Umbro's extensive archive and tailoring heritage as direct inspiration. I believe that we managed to set a very relevant and powerful tone with the England kits that I was privileged enough to work on, by integrating craft, smartness and a heightened attention to detail and fit with a three dimensional approach to garment design and construction. Throughout the design process I have utilised my own sculptural approach to design by creating football-specific body sculptures, which helped to determine the ergonomics of the garments, whilst helping to map out how the range of motion would be engineered. Having generated a higher sense of style in football performance apparel, it seemed logical to us to evolve the performance work we have created so far into a collection of products constructed and engineered for football, but curated for lifestyle." -- Aitor Throup

A.R.P. will be available through selected retailers worldwide from 1st September 2011.

Umbro,Ltd.
Umbro, Ltd., a subsidiary of NIKE, Inc., is a leading United Kingdom based football brand that has been a pioneer of sports tailoring for 87 years. The first Umbro England kit was developed in 1952 and the 1966 World Cup winning team wore Umbro throughout the tournament. Today, the company combines its heritage in sports tailoring with modern football insight to create groundbreaking and iconic football apparel, footwear and equipment that blend performance and style.
NIKE, Inc. reaches agreement to acquire Umbro

Beaverton, Ore. (23 October, 2007) – NIKE, Inc. (NYSE: NKE) today announced that it has reached agreement on an all-cash offer to acquire Umbro plc, a leading United Kingdom-based global football (soccer) brand with more than 70 years of experience in the world’s No. 1 sport and the world’s biggest football market.

The Board of Directors of Umbro plc, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange, has unanimously recommended that shareholders accept the offer of 193.06 pence, which together with the declared dividend values the company at approximately $582 million (£285 million), or approximately $4.00 (195 pence) per share.

“Umbro is a brand with a powerful heritage and deep experience in the world’s most popular sport and the world’s biggest football market," said Nike, Inc. President and CEO Mark Parker. “With its close links to The Football Association and the England team, Umbro’s future is even stronger than its past. This dynamic alignment of Umbro and Nike, with our complementary strengths and numerous ways to segment and grow the market, will lead the game at every level throughout the world. We are fully committed to helping Umbro reach its full potential, and we are delighted that Umbro’s board is unanimous in its support of our offer.”

The acquisition will significantly expand Nike’s global leadership in football, a key growth category for the company. Since the early 1990s, Nike has grown its football revenues from about $40 million to approximately $1.5 billion and established brand leadership in the sport. Umbro sells products directly or through licensees in more than 90 countries and has sports marketing relationships with many top football players, teams and leagues, including the England national team. Umbro’s 2006 annual revenues were approximately $276 million (£149.5 million). Umbro reports that if licensed sales were translated to direct sales based on wholesale cost, total wholesale equivalent sales were approximately $755 million (£409.4 million).

Commenting on the agreement, Umbro CEO Steve Makin said, “This is an excellent deal for all our stakeholders: it provides great value for shareholders and exciting prospects for our colleagues, partners and customers around the world. We will be a stronger and better business as part of Nike and this deal will allow us to accelerate our existing growth strategy by leveraging Nike’s global resources and expertise. We look forward to taking Umbro to new levels with Nike’s support.”

Brian Barwick, CEO of The Football Association, said: “The FA has enjoyed an excellent partnership with Umbro for more than 20 years. We are delighted that the proposed acquisition will allow us to continue our strong historical relationship with Umbro while benefiting from the marketing expertise and financial strength of Nike. Nike has provided firm assurances that The FA relationship with Umbro will be protected and enhanced, and we look forward to working closely with both companies moving forward.”

Nike intends to operate Umbro as a stand-alone affiliate brand, with a focus on accelerating the brand’s existing growth strategy. Similar to other brands in Nike’s portfolio, Umbro will benefit from Nike’s product research, design and development expertise, and supply chain and distribution resources.

Umbro will join a strong and growing Nike portfolio of affiliate brands, including Converse, which was acquired by Nike in 2003, Cole Haan and Hurley International. Converse exemplifies Nike’s track record of acquiring and growing complementary brands. Since acquiring Converse in 2003, revenue has grown at a compound rate of 22 percent, and in fiscal 2007 Converse revenues grew over 20 percent to surpass $550 million. The brand has benefited from Nike product design and brand management expertise. Nike’s portfolio of other businesses is contributing more than $2 billion in revenue today, and is targeted to contribute 25 percent of the company’s revenue growth by fiscal 2011.

To discuss these developments with analysts and investors, the company will hold a conference call Tuesday, October 23, at 3 pm ET.
